JV was born and raised in Homestead, Florida, a small city just south of Miami. After high school, he started college for about a year and then wandered for a number of years -gaining some life experience. In 1994, he worked with a small group to publish The Voodoo Highway ‘zine, which featured articles on local bands and national acts. It was then he got his first taste of being a music writer, interviewing Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, and a slew of other famous musicians. By 2001, he went back to college and received a B.A. in English Literature from Florida International University. His career as a Language Arts teacher flashed briefly, then he abruptly became the CEO of SKY Endo Technologies, a medical supply company. Being the head of a company afforded him opportunities to travel to countries in Latin America. But the grind and nature of the business world proved to be too much and he returned to teaching. In 2011, he earned his Master’s in Language Studies (TESOL) from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland and is currently a public school teacher in Baltimore. He publishes the blog site World Pool (http://jvmyka.blog.com) and is working on his second book of short stories.
